Preserving capers in brine
In a year 2 class, capers from the numerous bushes found in the school yard were cut and placed in brine to preserve them. They will later be given to the school cook to use them in his pasta sauces.
Making paper from shredded paper
In a year 2 class, shredded paper was collected and it was turned to paper once again by blending it into a pulp and placing it to dry on a mesh sheet. The paper was used as a Christmas card which students sent to the families.
Making Carob Syrup from Carob trees found on the school grounds
In a break club activity managed by 3 educators, carob pods were cut by the children and these were then boiled to make a traditional syrup in Malta called Gulepp. This is used to cure night coughs. The children helped stick the labels on the jars. They were then sold to partially fund a mural in the corridor.
Making marmalade from oranges found on our school grounds
During a break activity managed by 3 educators, marmalade was done. The children picked the oranges from the trees, then the school cook together with 3 parents made the marmalade. This was sold and the money was donated to fund a small part of an operation of the brother of a student who attends our school.
