Greenwashing our schoolyard.
Tiles, tiles and tiles. That is what our schoolyard currently looks like. That is of course not the kind of schoolyard we wish for our children. That’s why we’re going to make it greener. An ambitious project that required the help from students, teachers and parents.
What was needed?
Making our schoolyard greener required a major investment. We therefore applied for several funds (and got them) and asked our students to help. They raised an astonishing €17,000 by baking cookies, doing small “tasks” and organizing a sponsor run. This large amount is the equivalent of €40 per student.
How did we motivate the students?
We organized a class challenge! Each class made a plan to raise at least €750 together. Naturally, we helped them to get started and we ensured that (grand)parents, neighbors and friends could make a digital contribution (QR code per class).
How did we track progress?
A Euro thermometer was installed in each classroom so that students could keep track of how much money they had already raised with their class. Of course there was a great prize for the three classes that contributed the most to our shared goal. What? The first prize was a bowling trip, the second a fully catered picnic and the third a chips table with the entire class.
