BULLETIN 2 March 2023

News about SEPS Sustainability for European Primary Schools –  SEPS is a child friendly project about sustainability for European primary schools.

Good day dear colleagues, parents and pupils from all our partner schools.

Message for all our partner school pupils and teachers.

Dear students and colleagues from the schools who are interested and who participate in our project on inclusion and sustainability.

We believe that as many children as possible in the school‘s neighborhood are welcome at our school. All children must be able to learn together, have fun together and work together for the future. That is why the teachers of these schools want to visit each other to see what possibilities there are to realize that ideal. We also think that we have to pay to sustainability to get a better world in future

The Dalton School de Plantage already has several projects running. Recently, bags with sunflower seeds have been sent from the Netherlands to many schools abroad. They are gigantic flowers and we hope that many children will try to grow the plant as big as possible. I hope that that sunflower will also become a symbol for our cooperation (inclusion – job shadowing- and a project for and with children about sustainability) at the following schools:

  • Agrupamento de Escolas Dr. Francisco Sanches in Braga in Portugal.
  • CEIP El Peralejo in Alpedrete Spain
  • Ecole Jean Moulin Coincy France
  • Greeks schools from Athens (Mrs. Stavroula), Aegina (Mrs. Lilly) and Agistry (Elli and Kiki). Greece.
  • OBS De Plantage Houten in the Netherlands.
  • Primary school of Kolindros in Greece
  • Public Elmentary school Juan Navarra Garcia in Murcia in Spain.
  • Schools of the consortium from Ylivieska (Juho, Minna and their staff). Finland.
  • The Archbishop’s Seminary Rabat Malta
  • The The Volksschule of Steinheid in Germany.
  • The two Volksschulen Pestalozzi in Leoben,
  • The Volksschule in Karres Austria
  • Zebug Primary on Gozo and all primary schools of the Gozo College.

We will send or bring all these schools also sunflower seeds (Hopefully enough for all pupils, if not let us know).

You can grow them first in the classrooms and find a nice place outside later. It takes perhaps time, but be patient J it arrives.

Small hand out:

SEPS Sunflower project

It is the intention to give sunflower seeds to the children of all our partner schools. Then those sunflowers that can grow very large. It is not the intention to turn it into a competition, but rather to give it a challenge to take good care of the plants and to achieve the best (read high J) result possible. I think it fits well with our theme of the project “Sustainability”, after all we want to live in a more pleasant, greener world, and to give our children something to get started with.

For the groups that are going to work with it, we can make pots in the classroom, in which the seeds will germinate, then we can continue to grow the plants in school gardens or, if possible, somewhere at home or with family. It is nice to share experiences with the partner schools (via drawings, letters, photos, Whats App or Skype or even better put it on your school’s page of the SEPS website!).

The set-up:

Place the seeds in the classroom in April/May and then plant them elsewhere.

View the results in June/July.

Depending on the possibilities of the children, discuss germination and care, such as potting soil, parts of the plant, watering and light, turning the flower to the sun, think of the French name “Tournesol”. Later, the measurement of the growth and the final height can also be determined.

Best wishes from Diana Brouwer (director) and Anton Verwey (coordinator).

As Usual, keep in touch, Diana and Anton.

P.S. Did you know that now more than 20 schools have received seeds for all pupils? That is soon more than 6000 big sunflowers in Europe! Nice is n’t it?

As usual, stay safe and keep in touch,
