Jobshadowing trip to Italy december 2024 about inclusion

We (Sjanne en Suzanne) were in Italy from December 9 to 13. We visited various locations of the schools IC Piedimonte San Germano. Here we investigated how inclusive education is designed. We have also gained many other experiences. We received a very warm welcome, the people in Italy are very nice and helpful.

We went to the primary school (squola primeria) in San Germano. We later also visited two locations in San Germano for younger children, the nursery schools. Because we are currently also teachers in the nursery group, this was very interesting for us to see. There happened to be an open day at these locations, so we could see how this went.

The nursery school is for children aged 3 to 5 years.

Furthermore, the squola primaria is for children from 6 to 11 years old. Scuola secondaria is for children from 11 to 14 years old. We were shown around all the schools and were allowed to watch and participate in all classes. We also spoke a lot with different teachers. The teachers are very warm and have a good relationship with the children. We have noticed that the children in Italy are very polite. Education is designed differently than in the Netherlands. Teachers teach a specific subject (or two subjects) and teach different groups in one day. They do have their own regular classes. There are often several teachers in one class, because if needed, an extra teacher is present for support to children with special needs. This teacher is there for a certain number of hours to sit next to this child and provide support.

The children of the nursery school have lunch together every day in a common room, this lunch is provided. We were also allowed to attend lunch, which was truly an Italian lunch. First a plate of pasta, then a plate with some meat and vegetables, a small baguette and then fruit. Great to be here and experience how things work in Italy.

We really got a good idea of the education at this school in Italy.

After school, one of the teachers took us to a real small Italian restaurant for lunch. This was our first real Italian lunch and it was so nice to experience something of the Italian culture in this way. After school we also tried to see as much of the area as possible to see how people in Italy live. Italy has many beautiful places and we definitely want to come back.

We have gained many great ideas that we will definitely take with us to our own classroom. It was a very educational week, and a great experience.

Thank you!
