Trip report Greece Aegina, 22-9-2024 to 28-09-2024

On Sunday 22 September 2024, our trip to Aegina began. Our travelling party consisted of six students from Public Dalton School de Plantage, two teachers and Anton Verwey. After a good flight and short night, we left the next morning by boat for our destination.

We received a warm welcome at Vathi primary schools with a banner, traditional songs and dances.

On Tuesday, we went to the temple Afhaia with all the children to learn about Greek history and antiquities. There, we got to enjoy a beautiful view and learn a lot about Greek mythology. Later that day, we visited a pistachio factory. This company is the oldest pistachio processor on the island and works completely sustainably by choosing natural products, with no artificial additives.

On Wednesday, all the Dutch children made a presentation in English. They informed the Greek children about sustainability in the Netherlands. Using a presentation, they told about Dutch sustainability initiatives such as windmills, solar energy, using bicycles instead of cars and separating waste.

During lessons in Greek classrooms, we were informed about Greek initiatives related to sustainability. For instance, we learned that Greek houses are heated with solar panels, and heaters on the roof and that thick walls are used to keep heat out. Waste separation was also shown.

On Thursday, we went on an excursion by boat to Agistri. We visited the primary school there to see how the education system works there. After visiting the school, the children had a nice swim.

On Friday, we said goodbye to the school, the children and our colleagues. To close the sustainability project properly, we chose to visit the beach. There we cleaned up the beach and collected litter. At the end there was a picnic for all children of the school.

On Saturday, we ended this wonderful trip together with a day in Athens. The children had free time there, at the end we had a nice dinner together.
